Baroque Art
Baroque art originated in Italy around 1600 before spreading to the rest of Europe. Baroque artworks aimed to evoke emotion and passion through dynamic compositions, elaborate details, dramatic use of lighting and ornamentation.
In contrast to Renaissance art’s balance and harmony, Baroque art was asymmetrical, curving, and elaborate. Baroque painters used strong contrast of light and shadow for dramatic effect. Sculptures combined marble with gilding and rich colors. Architecture featured curving facades, colonnades, domes, and other ornamentation meant to inspire awe.
Prominent Baroque artists include Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, and Bernini. Caravaggio used chiaroscuro and drama. Rembrandt pioneered self-portraits and psychological depth. Rubens created voluptuous and colorful allegories. Velazquez brought a naturalism and looseness anticipating Impressionism. Bernini produced dramatic sculptures and architectural features like St. Peter’s Baldachin.
The Catholic Church embraced Baroque art as a means to inspire fervor. The opulence and grandiosity of Baroque reflected the ambitions of rulers and the aristocracy. By the mid-1700s, Baroque had evolved into Rococo art, a frilly and playful style suited to the frivolous pursuits of the wealthy.
The Baroque era ended as Neoclassicism arose in the mid-1700s, favoring order, reason and simpler ornamentation. But Baroque art left a lasting legacy. Its dramatic and elaborate sensibility continued to influence art, architecture, theater, and fashion. More broadly, Baroque art represented a cultural flowering that shaped 17th and 18th-century Europe.
At its heights, Baroque art achieved a harmony of architecture, painting, and sculpture that enveloped viewers in a total artistic experience meant to arouse wonder, devotion, and delight in the opulence of the era. Its grandeur lives on in the Baroque masterpieces that continue to inspire awe today.
