Napoleon Crossing the Alps

“Napoleon Crossing the Alps” (also known as Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass or Bonaparte Crossing the Alps; listed as Le Premier Consul franchissant les Alpes au col du Grand Saint-Bernard) is an oil painting by the French neoclassical painter, Jacques-Louis David. The artwork was created in 1805 and now measures 261 cm x 221 cm. The painting depicts Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary French military leader, on horseback bravely crossing the Swiss Alps in 1800, surrounded by a group of soldiers.

The painting is known for its dramatic portrayal of Napoleon, portraying him as a heroic and brave leader, riding on a majestic steed and surrounded by the stunning and rugged mountainous terrain. David’s mastery in capturing a sense of movement through the composition made the painting one of the most influential artworks of all time.

David is considered one of the most famous neoclassical artists of all time, acclaimed for his grand historical subjects and attention to detail. “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” became one of his most famous oil paintings together with “Oath of the Horatii” and “The Death of Socrates.”

Despite its extraordinary composition, the painting was not created during Napoleon’s actual expedition.
