The Potato Eaters

5/5

During March and the beginning of April 1885, van Gogh sketched studies for the painting and corresponded with his brother Theo, who was not impressed with his current work nor the sketches Van Gogh sent him in Paris. He worked on the painting from 13 April until the beginning of May, when it was mostly done except for minor changes that he made with a small brush later the same year.

Van Gogh said he wanted to depict peasants as they really were. He deliberately chose coarse and ugly models, thinking that they would be natural and unspoiled in his finished work

Description of The Potato Eaters

The Potato Eaters is one of Van Gogh’s earliest paintings, created in 1885. It depicts a group of peasants sitting around a table eating potatoes. Van Gogh wanted to capture the harsh and difficult lives of the rural poor. The painting is dark and earthy, painted in dull browns and greens. The figures seem monumental and heavy, conveying the hard manual labor of country life.
Van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist artist known for his expressive and vivid painting style. His artworks are characterized by dramatic, impulsive, and emotive brushstrokes, with a highly symbolic and emotional quality. Van Gogh sought to express a sense of human struggle, drama, and the wanderings of the soul in his paintings.
The Potato Eaters highlights Van Gogh’s early attempts at conveying the inner lives of peasants. The crudely painted, exaggerated figures reflect his empathy for their plight. Although lacking the vibrant colors Van Gogh became known for, the painting showcases his signature thick layers of impasto brushstrokes. The oil paint seems carved onto the canvas in broad, sweeping marks.
Other famous works by Van Gogh include The Starry Night, Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, Cafe Terrace at Night, and many self-portraits. Van Gogh’s Post-Impressionist style with emotive and expressive qualities went on to influence subsequent modern art movements like Expressionism and Fauvism. Although Van Gogh’s artworks received little recognition during his lifetime, today he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of art. The Potato Eaters provides a glimpse into Van Gogh’s humanity, empathy, and vision in his early artistic career.
